The summer months are always quite quiet at Matrix with many of our barristers going away. As a result, we don’t offer work experience in these months as there isn’t much for individuals to do or see. However, the autumn term is now in full swing and we were delighted to welcome Natalie to the office last week. Here is her account of her time at Matrix:
“Working at Matrix for the week has undoubtedly been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Not only are the staff and barristers very welcoming and friendly, but the attitude and atmosphere of the Chambers is extremely modern, making for a wonderful place to work.
As soon as I arrived on Monday morning, I was immediately plunged into the deep end and was given the opportunity to shadow Helen Mountfield QC in a permission hearing at the Court of Appeal. From then on, I have attended court everyday, observing Aaron Watkins in an extradition case, Hugh Tomlinson QC and Ben Silverstone in a case concerning alleged leaks of confidential documents, and David Wolfe QC in a Judicial Review. All of the barristers were incredibly helpful in providing me with background information for their cases and answering any questions I had. It was also fascinating to read their skeleton arguments, meet clients and to talk to the practice, fees and legal information teams about what type of work they do.
Suffice to say, it has been an amazing week and has inspired me to join the Bar after studying for a History degree at university. Learning about different types of law was invaluable as it gave me a flavour of what I might do in the future, as was visiting the Royal Courts of Justice and Westminster Magistrates Court; opportunities I might not otherwise have had. I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Matrix for being so accommodating and for making the week so enjoyable!”
Our pleasure, Natalie. We’re pleased to have had you with us for the week.
